A lesson from Fight Club

One of my favorite books is Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk. You’ll probably know first two the rules of Fight Club:

The first rule about Fight Club is: you don’t talk about Fight Club.

The second rule about Fight Club is: you don’t talk about Fight Club.

But there is another essential quote in this book. And to paraphrase the rules, you HAVE to talk about it. That quote says:

The things you used to own, now they own you.

For me, there is a lot of wisdom in that. In my experience, the lighter I travel, the easier it gets. Being able to move without burdens means spontaneity and ultimately freedom. This applies not only to traveling, but to every aspect of life. I want to surround myself only with meaningful things that add value to my life. Finding out what adds value and what’s just a burden: That’s the hard part.
